Saying Good-bye: Jean vs. Rogue

Saying Good-bye:
Jean

It was a habit left over from her relationship with Scott, the way she brushed her mind against his. Logan didn't like it, but he tolerated it because it was never more than a soft touch.

Jean's fingers moved idly though the hair on his chest, petting it as if were the pelt of an animal. The casual movement halted, her fingers splaying wide as she withdrew her mind from contact with his. Logan looked down to watch her body arch into his as she stretched.

She relaxed again, shifting to look up at his face, her eyes studying him.

"Do you know when you'll be back?"

Logan shrugged with his free shoulder.

"It'll take as long as it does, I guess."

Jean frowned and sat up. Her red hair tumbled around her shoulders. Logan reached up and brushed at a strand that sweat had slicked to her neck.

"You have no idea?"

"Depends on what I find," he answered. "If I find nothing, I'll be back in a couple of weeks. I may pick up more leads." He didn't add that he might not come back if he didn't like what he found. Jean didn't notice. She slid off the bed, bending to pick up the discarded sheet on the floor. She wrapped it around herself as she made her way to the dresser. She began to pick through her underwear drawer.

"Is it a good lead?"

Logan grunted. "Like all the others." No guarantees.

Jean pulled a matching set of underwear from the drawer before moving to her closet. She made a noise of acknowledgement.

"It's in Canada, right?"

"Yeah."

Logan watched Jean's fingers glide over the shoulders of her suites before settling on a cream colored one. She pulled it from the closet and disappeared into the bathroom.

"I'll be out in a bit," Jean said over her shoulder.

Logan dozed until the sound of the shower cut off. Sitting up, he cracked his neck and stood, reaching for the discarded jeans on the floor. He was dressed and packed before Jean opened the bathroom door, hair pulled back and suit flawlessly smoothed over her curves.

Logan took a moment to admire her.

Jean smiled at him, her cheeks pinking with pleasure. "Come on, Logan. Everyone's probably at breakfast already."

Logan grunted and followed her from the room, leaving the light on.

After breakfast, everyone else said their good-byes. Chuck was the first, telling Logan to let him know if he needed anything. Logan returned the offer. Scott was next, formal and stiff, nodding his head, a tight, angry look on his face. Logan returned the gesture, though it lacked the irritation and sense of pride that usually tinted his interactions with Scott. Jean's hand clutched his arm tightly.

Ororo came after Scott, enfolding him in a hug. She whispered good luck in his ear before pulling back and standing behind Chuck's wheelchair. Rouge was next. Logan hugged her as fiercely as she hugged him.

"Take care of yourself, sugar," she said.

Logan laughed and tugged on her white locks. "Yeah, sure thing, kid."

She rolled her eyes at him before falling back in line with her boyfriend. Remy offered him a hand and the same words as Rogue. Logan shook it and nodded.

Jean followed him to his truck, kissing him firmly before he climbed into the cab.

"Call me and let me know what's going on, okay?"

Logan settled his hand on the back of her neck, fingers twisted in her hair. He kissed her on the forehead.

"Yeah."

The last thing Logan saw before he left the mansion's property was Jean, standing at the edge of the garage and watching him drive away for a moment before going inside and closing the garage door.

Marie ran her gloved fingers over the lines in his hand, her head resting on his stomach. Logan watched with casual interest, his free hand tangled in the hair spread across his chest and stomach.

"We're going to be late to breakfast," he said. Marie looked up at him.

"It wouldn't be the first time," she answered with a wicked smile.

Logan grunted in laughter, freeing his hand from her hair and touching her bangs. Her brown eyes widened slightly and became slick with tears that she wouldn't let fall. He knew that look, the one that said she was hurting and wouldn't give into it.

"Come'ere." He tugged on her arm.

She slid up his clothed body till her head was resting on his shoulder. Logan groped around for his gloves, found them, and pulled them on. He rolled her onto her back, floating a scarf down over her face. Marie accepted the kiss, returning it fervently, before she accepted his mouth elsewhere.

Breakfast was over before Logan finally got out of bed to pack. Marie sat, naked and cross-legged, in the middle of the bed, watching him as he moved around the room.

He was tucking one of his plaid shirts into his duffle bag when Marie jumped off the bed and snatched it from him.

"Hey—"

"I like it," she said innocently, holding it against her body.

"Marie…" he growled.

Marie turned from him and began kicking through the sheets dangling from the edge of the bed. She bent and pulled something loose. When she turned, holding her hand out, Logan saw the scarf he hadn't used to kiss her mouth dangling from her hand.

His eyes caught on the still damp spot before looking up to meet Marie's eyes.

"Well," she said, "what do you think? Fair trade?"

Logan snatched it from her, holding it to his nose briefly before shoving it into a back pocket.

"Fair trade," he agreed.

She traded him several more items heavy with the mixed smell of them before he'd finished packing.

Marie must have told Chuck that he was leaving, because when they arrived at the garage, the X-Men were there.

Logan cast a look at Marie before releasing her. Chuck wheeled forward and told him to let him know if Logan needed anything. Logan said he would. Jean stepped forward next, hugging him warmly. She said good-bye, I hope you find what you want to know. Logan said thanks. Scott followed her, clasping his hand on Logan's shoulder and wishing him good luck. Ororo hugged him as Jean had with same sentiments as Scott.

Remy shook his hand and cast a teasing glance at Marie. Logan squeezed his hand tightly and sent back a warning look. Remy laughed.

The X-Men left Marie and Logan alone in the garage. She looked down at her feet and then up at him.

Logan hugged her tightly.

"If you don't come back, I'll hunt your sorry ass down, Logan."

Logan laughed and tugged the scarf from his pocket to kiss her.

In the end, Logan left with the cab of his truck saturated with the smell of him and her and the way they loved each other.

As he cleared the mansion's gates, Logan lifted a hand to wave good-bye to Marie.

She was too far away to see it, but from where she was leaning against the edge of the garage, she lifted her own hand, her fingers curling into a fist just before he lost sight of her.
